Postcard - Oregon Trail Hardships

Many movies, books and other media over the years have romanticized the stories of the pioneers and immigrants who arrived in the US West region via the "Oregon Trail".
Not so many show the hardships encountered along the way.

According to Wikipedia ... "Settlers often had to cross flooded rivers. Indians sometimes attacked the wagon trains. Cholera, smallpox, and firearms accidents were the chief causes of death on the trail (it is estimated that between 1835 and 1855 nearly 10,000 people lost their lives along the Trail). Food, water, and wood were always scarce, and the travelers often encountered contaminated water holes. During summer, the trail was crowded with wagon trains, army units, missionaries, hunting parties, traders, and even sightseeing tours. Some travelers complained that they had to wear masks for protection against the dust kicked up by the heavy traffic. It took from four to six months to cross the entire Oregon Trail - most wagon trains traveled about 12–15 miles per day.

I found this postcard at a local Goodwill, and was intrigued, as this is one of the only "negative" postcards I've ever come across!

Handmade Valentine Card ...

I rescued this darling hand made Valentines card from a dumpster years ago, when Ivor's family was emptying and cleaning out his house.

Ivor was an engineer, as you can see in the detailed work he put into this Valentine to his adored wife Mildred in 1931.

It appears he had a sense of humor as well!

This line is red.
This one is blue.
I am well fed,
And so are you.
To my Valentine

Hand and Heart ... PFF

This handmade postcard caught my eye - tucked into the bottom of a bin at the Goodwill Outlet Store ... I just HAD to buy it!

I can't imagine why someone would have given away this beautiful art/postcard/heart, but their loss is MY gain!

Willamette River, Oregon

This aerial view of the Willamette River in Oregon is how we usually see this river. It's hard to imagine what Beth and her family are seeing as this usually peaceful river steps over its banks and invades towns along it's path.

As Beth mentioned in her PFF post, her town of Independence is in danger of being flooded over by the rising waters of the Willamette River.

My thoughts and prayers are with people all over my home state, and indeed all over the world, who are dealing with disasters and the aftermath of disasters.

I almost feel guilty being safe, warm and happy here where I live!!!

Yverdon Souvenir Postcard - PFF

I found this postcard, along with several others of the same area and time frame, in a bin at the Goodwill Outlet Store nearly 10 years ago. I couldn't believe someone would give away these treasures!!!

I wish I knew the story behind this card ... how it came to be at a thrift store in Oregon over a hundred years after it was printed ... a world away ...

When I researched "Yverdon - Place de l'Hotel de ville", I found the following picture ...

It was posted by Marc on his blog "Allo, t'es ou?". I love how the present day building contrasts with the 1900 version on the postcard!
