Sponge Bob Postcard

When my kids were small we actually watched this cartoon a few times ...
Ah the memories!

Did you ever watch this show?
If you did ... did you ever notice Sponge Bob has a heart-shaped tongue???

Nope, neither did I.

So I'm linking this incredibly, uh, colorful postcard up with Guest Heart Thursday!

Where Were You?

When the mountain blew?

May 18, 1980 ...
Mount St. Helens in Washington state exploded.
Also, mom's 41st birthday.
Way to go, mom!!!

It was a Sunday morning, and we stopped at the top of the hill behind our house to watch the eruption. I will never forget that day.

Hearts on a Bus

I had never heard of the "Buffalo Exchange" ... until I found several unused postcards at the thrift store. Of course the hearts caught my eye first!

Apparently there is a Buffalo Exchange somewhere nearby ... I may someday try to visit it - I'm very curious as to what kind of "new & recycled fashion" they trend!

Join us over at "The Best Hearts Are Crunchy" for this week's edition of "Postcard Friendship Friday"!

Still Winter ... PFF

It looks like these guys are having a bit of fun at a winter party before spring finally arrives!
(Although I know most people in our part of the world are tired of the cold!)

I found this postcard at the thrift store, and couldn't resist the cuteness!

Oregon's Crater Lake Postcard

I was so little when our family visited Crater Lake that the only thing I really remember is the verrrry, verrrrry lonnnnnng straight road we had to drive to get there.
((As I recall I had to use the bathroom at the time, and there was a little urgency involved - which may help to explain this inexplicable memory))

Someday I will go back and get some adult memories of this beautiful place.

Devil's Backbone and the lake.

Oregon's Painted Hills Postcard

It's been more than 30 years since I've visited the Painted Hills in Central Oregon. These are incredible geologic formations - many are not much taller than a person!

I found this postcard at a local thrift store ... and immediately had the urge for a Road Trip!

Instead, I'm doing the next best thing and linking up with Beth's "Postcard Friendship Friday" - where I can go on a virtual "road trip" around the world!!!

Pastel Rose Postcard

I found this beautiful pastel rose postcard in an old scrapbook.

The edges had been rounded off, but that's okay - it's still a beautiful postcard!

Unserschones Sudtirol Postcard

I found this postcard of a village in North Italy at a thrift store ... it had been bent and discarded.
But the memories it stirred are priceless.
In what seems like another lifetime, and a trip we took while stationed in Germany.
On the map it looked like a shortcut.
In reality, it was a tiny winding road high in the mountains. In some places it was one lane and you looked out your window straight down. And down. And down some more. There were no guardrails.
It turned out to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, and I'd go again if I could.

I didn't notice until I got home ... one of the green patches in the mountains on the far side of the valley is shaped like a heart.

Christmas in 3D

You can't tell it from the scan, but this gorgeous card is 3D!
It was in a group of 5 or so that I found at the thrift store a couple of months ago ...
and is one of the few Christmas postcards I have.

Hearty Teatime Postcard

I found this postcard at the thrift store a while back. It's delicate yummy pastel beauty certainly caught my eye!

Do you see some hearts in this card?
(if not, look closely at those delicate petals painted on the teapot ...)

Yellowstone National Park

This postcard depicts the famous "Old Faithful" geyser at Yellowstone National Park. It looks pretty much the same now as it did in 1992 (when this postcard was issued) ... and the same as it looked when my family visited back in 1965 or so. I was just a little tyke, but I have vivid memories of Old Faithful!

I am glad that our national parks have reopened after the 2-week shutdown ... but, like many Americans, am frustrated that it happened.
I won't get into politics here, because I loathe politics.
And I know that my opinion is just that. MY opinion. I will not force it on you, although I suspect most people hold similar opinions!
So I will just let it go with this ... I will express MY opinions during the next election.

Autumn Fairies

For the past 2 weeks I have felt a bit like these fairies.
The wind has blown, the rains have fallen ...
The leaves have started to turn brown and fall.
Sigh. Summer is over.

Someone's Arizona Vacation ...

I can't stand to see old postcards and photos in the bins at the thrift store "outlet" store. I know it is the final chance for these pieces of history to be found before they are disposed of (usually paper is shredded).

So when I found an old photo album of someone's Arizona vacation/road trip, I just had to snatch it up. It was full of wonderful pictures ... interspersed with postcards like this one.

Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona
copyright 1992

This photo was stuck on the page right under the postcard.

(only one photo of the bunch was labeled with a date - 1998)

I am linking this with Beth's "Postcard Friendship Friday"!

'Tis the Time of Year for Fireworks!

It's the time of year for fireworks!!!

I won't be in Vancouver or Portland for fireworks this year, however ... because

I will be in Independence - where Alan and Beth host an awesome 4th of July party - we get to watch the parade from her front yard - eat a wonderful meal - and stay for rockin' fireworks if we want!!!

I am going to link this up with Beth's "Postcard Friendship Friday" this week - although she is recovering from oral surgery and may not be able to be online at all ...

I've missed joining in on PFF, but with my "new to me" computer Sissie donated ... I'm baaaack!!!

Panoramic Photo Collage Postcard

This "panoramic photo collage" was done by artist Masumi Hayashi in 1996.

The subject is beautiful ... but the reality is horribly sobering.

"Tule Lake Relocation Camp and Segregation Center, Klamath Falls Basin, California. Tule Lake was the site of one of ten concentration camps which housed Japanese Americans forcibly removed from the west coast states during WWII. In 1943 Tule Lake was chosen as the "segregation center" for persons answering "no-no" on the government loyalty questionaire. Peak population was 18,789 out of 120,000 interned."

Love is in the Air!

And on the Postcard!

Don't you just love a wedding announcement/invitation ...
On a postcard?
I've never seen one before!!!

The best part ... Tracy is my cousin's daughter!

And North Bend is right on the Oregon coast!!!

What a beautiful and perfect setting for these two wonderful "kids" to celebrate their marriage.

As a note ... I don't know Clint.
But I do know Tracy - and she is one of the nicest, gentlest, most respectful people I know. I am proud to call her family!

Dover Dam postcard

This is another postcard I picked up a while back at the thrift store. After being donated, sorted, thrown in a bin and pawed over for who-knows-how-long by who-knows-how-many-people it was folded, cracked and rumpled ... but it was mine!

"DOVER DAM, one of fourteen dams in the Muskingum Conservancy District, is located on Ohio Route No. 8 near Dover, Ohio. This dam, lying across the main channel of the Tuscarawas River, is the key dam in the system which controls the waters which pour eventually into the Muskingum River. The Muskingum Conservancy District covers about one-fifth of the total area of Ohio and is one of the greatest flood control systems in America. Its lakes afford beauty, fishing, and boating comparable to that found in any section of the United States."

Payette Lake Postcard - PFF

No. 87 in UNION OIL COMPANY'S Natural Color Scenes of the West

"Payette Lake on North Fork of the Payette River, Idaho, is reached on Highway 15 from Boise or Highway 95. Wooded shore lines, crystal-clear water are characteristic of Idaho's vacation land jeweled with excellent fishing lakes and streams."

"See the OLD WEST this year with 76 Gasoline"

Sorry for being a little late joining up with this week's "Postcard Friendship Friday"!
