Christmas in 3D

You can't tell it from the scan, but this gorgeous card is 3D!
It was in a group of 5 or so that I found at the thrift store a couple of months ago ...
and is one of the few Christmas postcards I have.

Curt Teich Postcard Folder - Postcard Friendship Friday

I was at the Goodwill Outlet store yesterday, getting ready to leave. The workers were bringing out one more group of bins ... of course I had to stay to look them over.

Because we are not allowed to "shop" until all of the bins are in place, I glanced through the bins only. And saw ... POSTCARDS!!!

I parked in front of that particular bin, and noticed there was another lady doing the same thing.
We eyed each other, knowing this was "competition".
I pretended to be interested in something in a nearby bin ...
So did the other lady.

Finally the "OKAY"! I held back, waiting for the competition to make their move.
Then I reached for the postcards. SCORE!!!

Turns out the "competition" didn't give a hoot about the postcards - she was reaching for the sewing supplies.

This postcard folder is what I scored (along with a second one I will post about in the future).

From what I can tell, it is a "postcard folder" from the 1940's by Curt Teich & Co. out of Chicago.

On the inside of the folding envelope style postcard folder are nestled 9 cards - with 18 views of fishes of Hawaii - found at the Waikiki Aquarium.

I have never heard of "postcard folders" before ... it looks like I will be doing a bunch more research!

Postcard from Chad, PFF

This beautiful artwork is from Chad.

I found it in a box of Grammie's papers.
This beautiful card is dated 1994, and was given to LHBC (the former Ladd Hill Bible Church).
I'm not sure how Grammie ended up with it, except that she attended that church for many years, and probably pulled it out of the trash because she loved beautiful things.

There is a note on the front "I think the Martins" ... probably because there is no indication on the back as to who it was from!

Postcard from Pont-Aven

This is another postcard found at Goodwill ... showing a tiny town in France called "Pont-Aven". It is known for it's "14 watermills, 15 houses", and is a very popular artist destination.

I especially love the rock work, and the reflections in the small stream.

Jury Duty, Jury Duty, Jury Duty! Postcard Friendship Friday

I'm not sure how I ended up with this in my postcard collection ...
I probably picked it up at the Goodwill, where I find so many interesting cards and things.

I am in two minds about being excused from jury duty ...
On one hand, I completely understand there are very valid reasons to be excused ... my mom got called for jury duty last week, and had to be excused because she is the main caregiver for my handicapped father. Things like illness, certain professional reasons, and even death are valid excuses (my grandmother got her first jury duty notice EVER - on the day of her funeral!).

On the other hand, jury duty can be entertaining, and everyone should try to sit on a jury panel at least once in their life. I've sat on 3 juries in the past, and always wanted to be called for a Grand Jury (no reason, just curiosity). I finally got called ... and had to be excused because at the time my ex and I were stationed in Georgia, and they refused to fly me back home to Oregon for the event!

Have you been called for jury duty? Have you ever sat on a jury? Was it boring ... or fun?
What kind of verdict was reached?
(2 "guilty", 1 "hung" for me!)
Let me know!

Postcard - "Old Ironsides" - Postcard Friendship Friday

USS Constitution, nicknamed "Old Ironsides" when cannon balls bounced off her oak planking. She was undefeated in 40 historic battles. Built in 1797, she is still a US Navy ship and a living museum of Naval history.

Happy Memorial Day.

Postcard - Reflections of the City of Roses ...

I love postcards from places I recognize ... I am thrilled when I can look and say "I've been there!"

I don't know if I've been to this exact place in Portland, but it had to have been close by!

Another Oregon Postcard - PFF

Once again, the ocean.
My favorite place.

Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Japan, whose country was devastated, and is still being devastated, by an earthquake, tsunami, and now horrific natural gas fires.
